For this assignment, we had to identify design principles and formal organization that we learned in class and apply it into the insect that I was researching about, which is about the hornet.
Formal organization can be categorized as:
- centralized
- linear
- radial
- clustered
- grid
The ordering / design principles are:
- axis
- symmetry
- rhythm
- hierarchy
- transformation
- datum
Identifying design principles and formal organization of The Japanese Giant Hornet
We also learned about variations in class, and also had to interpret it with the insect. However, this time we are to identify 3 variations using closeups of the insect. Thats why in the image below only certain parts were rendered to show the variations.
Here are a few examples of variations:
- Form: shape, size, scale
- Balance: harmony, unity
- Hierarchy: dominance, contrast
- Surface: repetition, gradation, texture

Reflection:
I learned that in design, it is important to keep these principles in mind, otherwise my designs will just be unrealistic and hard to bring to life. I also now have the ability to analyse organic or inorganic objects and apply the principles accordingly.
