To be honest I didn't really started making my artworks until Monday night. Not that I was procrastinating, I just had a idea blockage. Suddenly 15 minutes before my Contextual Studies class, I had a rather unexplained eureka moment. Ideas flowed in continuously and I quickly took out my sketchbook before the concept disappears. I drew it out and told myself there isn't time to waste, I had to quickly start working on it since it was 4 days to the deadline.

Drafts of artworks
With no time to waste, that very night I started working on the first one artwork The Friendship Void since it was in geometrical shapes, so it was easier to cut.
The Sketching and Marking Process
I measured it out and marked onto the sugar paper. It was a really inconvenient way of making this artwork, but since it is a collage, it has to be cut and pasted *cries*. The work begins...
The next day, I started working on my second artwork. For this particular artwork I wanted to give it a black background with some clouds, so I spray painted the background black and the clouds with a white spray paint from far, to give the gradient effect. It turned out better than I expected!
Next came the part of making the tower, which made me become an architecture student for a second.

Finished half-way
Now the tricky part, how do I get a model to be the person looking at the smartphone for me? I can't find any in Google, so I became the model myself. Thanks to my awesome friend Tina who took a picture of me after class lol.

Assignment 1: State of Mind - Social Media
In the making
Have you ever experienced when you are charging your precious iPhone but the power point is high in the sky and the phone is hanging for its life with the cable? Well fear no more today we will be learning on how to create a holder for your iPhones during charging out of everyday materials.
What I use is a shampoo bottle, since it is durable and provides adequate stiffness to support and iPhone.
For this assignment I have to create a series of instructional drawings, and drawings I shall provide!
Below is how you can make your very own iPhone holder with very little to no money at all.
The first thing you should do is prepare the materials. Get any empty shampoo bottles that are lying around in your house and a few art cutting materials.
The Final product proudly displayed in my bedroom. Excuse the dirty iPhone charger adapter, it is for my iPhone 4 hahahaha.

Below is how you can make your very own iPhone holder with very little to no money at all.
The first thing you should do is prepare the materials. Get any empty shampoo bottles that are lying around in your house and a few art cutting materials.
1. My favourite tool that is essential for all designers is the blade cutter. Sharp, precise, elegant, what more could you ask for eh?
2. Start by peeling out those nasty branding and labelling from your bottle.
3. Next, mark the outline with a sharpie or pen as shown as below. The left bottle is the front, while the right is the back.
4. Cut out the shape as marked.
5. Next, we need to create an access point for the adapter to fit. Draw out the shape of your charger and cut it out.
6. Don't you hate it when you see your charging cable all bendy when you fit into a bottle? Cut a small access point large enough for the cable to pass through at the butt of the bottle. Haha butt :3
7. Now unleash your creativity to your heart's desire. Paint it into any style that you like, after all it is yours.
8. The final step is to enjoy your finished iPhone holder, and laugh at those whose smartphones are hanging from the ceiling.
The Final product proudly displayed in my bedroom. Excuse the dirty iPhone charger adapter, it is for my iPhone 4 hahahaha.
See you all in the next post :)

Side-Assignment 2: Instructional Diagrams
For my first assignment for 2-Dimensional Design (the letter assignment doesn't count!), I was supposed to create three artworks that has an aspect taken from one of several artists provided by my lecturer. The criteria for this assignment is that is has to be 45cm x 45cm and only in black, grey and white. When I first got the briefing for the assignment along with the list of artists, much pain was endured when going through one by one.
Have you ever got the feeling that you scrolled through so many artists then you remembered one of the styles you like, but couldn't remember who and had to go through again? No? Well I did, for four times, FOUR FREAKING times. Good times... good times...
Anyways like I previously stated, I glanced through the list of artists four times before I actually noted down a few that I liked. The top three artists that I personally was inspired by was Joseph Alber, Bridget Riley and Barbara Kruger.
It was a tough one, picking one of these three renowned artists and adapt their style into my own artworks. Finally, I decided to go with Bridget Riley. Why? Let's take a look at her art style. Bridget Riley is famously known for her artworks that incorporates the concept of optical illusions. In fact, she was considered to be the mother of op art (optical art). My desire to play with my audience's minds when presenting my artwork naturally makes Riley's style the perfect choice.
I spent 4 days making these fantastic artworks, you can read the making process here. When I submitted them on the due date, Mr. Choy really liked them (thank god!). So as usual, after submission we have to write an article about it so here it is explaining the definitions of my artworks.

This artwork explains how social media addiction has became a real issue since its inception. We now become so addicted to the point we couldn't last 5 seconds without looking at a smartphone screen. However, we know we are addicted, we want to stop, but the internet always pulls us back with temptations and desires. It soon becomes a sensation of drowning, where there is no escape, always being pulled down to the bottom of the ocean (the ocean represents the internet).
I manipulate the line thickness and wavy-ness (yes I know it is not a word, humour me) to create the sensation of the ocean. This artwork is heavily inspired by the famous artwork by Bridget Riley, the Cataract 3 made in 1967.

This artwork emphasises on the importance of being aware of our surroundings at all times, even when we are on our smartphones. Sadly, thats not the case with the current generation. Almost everyone who stares into their smartphone screen checking their Facebook or Twitter are most likely not being aware of the surroundings, ranging from walking around blindly or bumping into people. I portray the emptiness of the surrounding with a black background with clouds, representing our own little world without distractions when we are emotionally attached to our smartphones. Yep, that's me haha. Anyways I want to portray the platform I am standing on with a touch of Bridget Riley, hence the illusional steps. The steps represent the crumbling world surrounding us, leaving behind just a few steps before it all falls apart, and when it falls apart, you know what I mean.
I had a sudden eureka moment about this one, and it also quickly became my favourite among all, actually everyone in class said this was the best, so yay. Most probably it was the clouds that drew most of attention. The clouds was a hard one to make, since I never made it before. It turned out pretty well, don't you think? The steps was inspired by Fragments by Riley again.

Have you experienced this where you are having dinner or lunch with your friends and family, expecting to socialise and watch it all crumble with them staring at their smartphones? This is what I want to portray in this artwork. The circle in the middle represents the illusion of a deep hole, where what we don't speak to each other physically, but on the internet. Like seriously? I am sitting right next to you and you are chatting with me through WhatsApp?? What is your problem?!
The optical illusion you see here is heavily adapted from Movement In Squares. The chess black and white layout makes it suitable to represent a dining table.

Assignment 1: State Of Mind - Social Media
We were given a side-assignment from Mr. Choy to create a non-traditional "love" letter. Why a love letter? A letter itself is boring, so the love letter is supposedly created with non-artsy materials like pens and markers, along with our emotions embedded into it. My letter needs to have the word 'BELIEVE IN YOURSELF' as I have chosen it a week ago.
I was frustrated for a few days thinking on how to create an artwork that will stand above all the rest, and will really blow my lecturer's mind. Then one night, I scrolled my photo album on my iPhone to look for ideas and I came across my old photoshop work. This was made when we first met Tina, hi Tina! during semester 1. There was like a photoshop war that time. By the way, check out Tina's blog here https://blabxajournal.wordpress.com
Final mock product.
I hope you like my finished product. See you in the next post guys!

So yeah, unexpectedly this particular masterpiece became the inspiration of my "love" letter. This is also a great idea since I am using my very own face, it is more personal and is a great idea to introduce myself. So the idea is to spell out the word with my faces, and to further mind-f*ck my audience the background will also be made completely out of my face.
Time to begin work.
I first took a picture and photoshopped out the background, leaving just my "beautiful" face.
Since this is going to be a very complicated project, I had to make a mock up in photoshop too see how many faces I had to make and print.
Final mock product.
Yes. It is a whopping 94 faces I had to cut.
Time to print and cut!
It took me around 12 hours plus doing the whole thing. I was about to lose my sanity cutting out the faces. The finished artwork is seriously creepy, and the longer you look, the more of me you see. Forget the motto 'Believe In Yourself', more like 'The More You Look, The More You See'.
The final product.
I hope you like my finished product. See you in the next post guys!

Let's talk a bit about Mr. Kriz Cruz shall we?
Mr. Kriz Cruz, full name Krzysztof Izdebski-Cruz, born May 8, 1966, is a famous Polish artist famous for his metalpoint art technique. This revolutionary technique is made using metal such as gold, silver, iron etc scratched like pencils on a piece of paper coated with chemistry mumbo-jumbo (sorry too many fancy words to keep up).
Drawn with pencil? Nope, with metal!
But what really blew us away is his extraordinary attention to details. His passion in pastels and oil paintings really too real to be a painting. Like seriously, many will unmistakably think his paintings are real photographs. Thats how good he is. During his workshop, we learn many essential tips during the making of pastel paintings. I never knew we were suppose to paint from left to right if we are right-handed, and vice versa. No wonder so many of my paintings were smudged and destroyed in the process.
In fact we were so lucky Mr. Kriz Cruz is having his exhibition with his real artworks in our very own CoDA gallery at Taylor's University Lakeside Campus. It was a wonderful opportunity to see this artwork in real life, which is much better than just seeing it on a computer screen.
It was wonderful experience getting to know Mr. Kriz Cruz and Mrs. Natalia with their inspiring artworks and workshop. I hope The Design School can invite more aspiring artists such as them to give more talks in the future to inspire us to become great artists.
What did my friends think of me when they first met me? Let's find out by interviewing some of my friends for this Effective Public Communication assignment!
I interviewed Yaya, Amer and Merry, all of whom I met earlier this year. I chose them to get the most accurate results possible.
See you next time :D

Yes, my friends and I attempted the Spicy Korean Ramen Challenge! My fellow coursemates and I filmed the full session of our taste buds being burned alive by this spicy b*tch. Link to video below.
For your information, the ramen we ate was the Samyang Foods Budalk Bokkeummyeon Ramen, which was rated by theramenrater.com the 3rd spiciest ramen in the world. No kidding. Initially it was tolerable, but the heat slowly built in our delicate mouths to the point of intense burning. Milk didn't help either. So for the next 30 minutes we were screaming in pain, not shown in the video because of shame, constantly trying to cool our mouths.
Although spicy as hell, the taste was really delicious. I even bought myself another packet after the session. I don't think my friends will return to eat this again though. Personally, I would rate this ramen a 4.6/5 and highly recommend my fellow peers to try it, remember to film yourselves too haha.
